2021-05-28
The study of MetaSUB* International Consortium that collects, analyzes, and compares the  metagenomic samples of urban cities all around the world has been published in Cell on May 26, 2021. Dr. Soojin Jang, Head of Antibacterial Resistance Lab of Institut Pasteur Korea, participated in the MetaSUB consortium and studied the microbiome of Seoul, S. Korea as one of the 60 cities of 37 countries. The study presented the first systematic, worldwide catalog of the urban microbial ecosystem that includes 4,246 known species of urban microorganisms and those not in the reference database including 10,928 viruses, 748 bacteria, etc.

Dr. Jang said, "Like Penicillin was discovered from microorganisms, new microbial genes that are related to the biosynthesis of novel antimicrobial substances may help antibiotics discovery," and added, “Building and sharing the accumulated data of regular collection and analysis of microorganisms of the world will yield greater results.” “The analysis was based on the microbial DNAs, and the impact on humans and the environment will be complemented by the studies of living microorganisms” added Dr. Jang.

In addition to the Institut Pasteur Korea, Institut Pasteur, France, and Institut Pasteur Montevideo, Uruguay, have also participated in the study.
