Interview with Dr. Ji-Young Min, Head of Respiratory Viruses Research Laboratory at Institut Pasteur Korea. Dr. Min explains her career history.

“We are stuck under a glass ceiling. Keep moving in your field and build your career. And then, you can get the ladder to climb up and overcome the ceiling."

Dr. Min started teaching middle school immediately after earning a bachelor’s degree in biology. After a year of teaching she left for the United States to further her science career. She overcame the language barrier and economic downturn, and secured a scholarship and invitation to join one of the top three laboratories researching flu. At that time, the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 was running rampant in Vietnam. As a postdoctoral fellow in the lab, Dr. Min focused on research with the influenza virus which ultimately became her lifelong career.

Dr. Min completed her studies and moved onto NIH and evaluated an avian flu vaccine.  She came back to Korea to focus on influenza research that occurs in the local area.

In 2011, Dr. Min joined IPK as lead in the Respiratory Viruses Research Laboratory. "As a Korean scientist, I would like to make a contribution by discovering innovative treatments in the field of respiratory viruses."
