Dr. Youngmee Jee, the Institut Pasteur Korea CEO, presented on Mar. 3 the S. Korea’s COVID-19 vaccine status and discussed global strategies to overcome the pandemic at the event hosted by the World Bank, titled “Deploying the COVID-19 Vaccine: Where, When and How?”
Nine renowned healthcare experts, including Budi Gunadi Sadikin, The Minister of Health, Indonesia, Prof. Michael Baker of Department of Public Health University of Otago, and Prof. Monica Gandhi of San Francisco General Hospital, USA, participated in the forum.

Dr. Jee shared the COVID-19 vaccination status in Korea initiated since Feb. 26 following a thoroughly designed plan and introduced the government and the public's coordinated efforts for successful vaccinations of the entire population.
Dr. Jee mentioned that the government’s sufficient communications led to a very high rate of the public's consent for vaccination and close monitoring and prompt response to adverse reactions are in progress as vaccinations are carried out. She added that Korea is aiming for herd immunity by November 2021.
For a key strategy to overcome the COVID-19, Dr. Jee pointed to active participation in vaccination and compliance with quarantine guidelines such as wearing a mask and keeping distance. She also emphasized the importance of information sharing and research cooperation on mutant viruses.
Additionally, to rapidly supply vaccines to the world, including the developing countries, and achieve herd immunity, Dr. Jee suggested active utilization of the Developing Country Vaccine Manufacturers Network and facilitation of technology transfers to the vaccine developers in the developing countries to increase their vaccine production capacity. She stressed there is an urgent need for cooperation between COVAX partners, the World Health Organization (WHO), CEPI, and GAVI, to expand vaccine production and achieve herd immunity on a global scale.
Panelists all agreed that rapid vaccination in worldwide and international cooperation is essential to overcome the pandemic.
