(Feb, 17, 2025, Gyeonggi-do, Rep. of Korea) Institut Pasteur Korea (IPK) announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Jeonbuk National University Hospital (JBNUH) to promote joint research in the field of the red bio industry on February 14.
The signing ceremony was held at Ongoeul Hall on the third floor of JBNUH’s main building, with key representatives from both institutions in attendance, including Sung Key Jang, CEO of IPK and Jong-cheol Yang, Director of Jeonbuk National University Hospital.
Through this agreement, the two institutions plan to conduct joint research in the red bio industry, which encompasses the fields of healthcare, medicine, and pharmaceuticals.
The collaboration will focus on conducting joint research on key aspects of the bio-pharmaceutical sector, the largest segment of the red bio industry. This includes the development of therapeutics and vaccines for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, as well as research on antibiotic resistance.
Beyond joint research, the two institutions also plan to collaborate on the collection and utilization of research resources such as infectious disease specimens and pathogens. Additionally, they will work together on diagnostic and testing fields, as well as develop a comprehensive strategy for advancing future medicine and the medical industry.
Sung Key Jang, stated, “We will make every effort to contribute to the advancement of Korea’s healthcare industry by conducting research on infectious disease vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostic agents in preparation for the post-pandemic era.”
Jong-cheol Yang, added, “By combining the hospital’s extensive clinical data with the research capabilities of Institut Pasteur Korea, we believe we can achieve meaningful outcomes. JBNUH will continue its efforts and support in the research sector to provide a higher level of medical services.”
Meanwhile, the red bio industry refers to the application of biotechnology in medical and pharmaceutical fields. Driven by factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the industry has been continuously expanding, with the domestic market size reaching approximately 5.33 trillion KRW as of 2023.
