2009-04-10

Institut Pasteur Korea received the approval on BL-3 (Bio-safety Level 3) facility on newly constructed on Pangyo Headquarters from KCDC (Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) on March 30, 2009, giving it a foothold as the world-class biotechnology institute.

This is the first approval on BL-3 facility built in the newly constructed building and the largest of its type in Korea (330 m²). In addition, IP-Korea received the certificate permission to IP-Korea P3 facilities for the first time in Korea on May, 2008. These approvals are supposed to secure IP-Korea’s bio-safety as well as maintenance capacities by protecting researchers from infections and preventing viruses from being leaked.

Dr. Ulf Nehrbass, CEO of Institut Pasteur Korea said, “While Institut Pasteur Korea has established the world-class advanced infra with more safer environment to make a research on highly dangerous viruses causing the serious diseases, this permission is expected to be good for joining the international and notable research projects” “Pangyo institute with new BL-3 facilities will play an important role in reinforcing drug discovery capabilities and enhancing biotech R&D’s reputation and competitive edges for Korea in the world”, he added.

Unique characteristics of IPK BL-3 facilities, located on 5th floor includes as follows;
- Steel reinforced concrete structure: at the beginning of the BL-3 design stage, to separate the BL-3 labs from other labs, the BL-3 labs were designed with reinforced concrete structure
- Installation of air tight doors: to make each room airtight, seven airtight doors were installed.
- Independent maintenance space: to carry out the maintenance of facilities, such as electric lamps and filter units replacement, an independent maintenance room was designed on the 6th floor.
- Laying anti-static epoxy (Sila floor 264AS N): to prevent data communication errors from research equipment, anti-static epoxy was laid on the floor.
