Institut Pasteur Korea (IPK) successfully hosted an international symposium, both online and offline, under the theme 'Enhancing International Cooperation in the Fight against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), the Silent Pandemic' on October 12th.
The symposium focused on sharing the current status of AMR surveillance and therapeutic research in the Asia-Pacific region and delved into international R&D cooperation strategies, leveraging the Pasteur Network.

Following the 1st event held last year, IPK hosted its second international symposium on AMR this year in hands with the Pasteur Network, consisting of 32 research institutes in 25 countries around the world, along with its R&D Alliance for Preparedness of Infectious Diseases (RAPID).
14 speakers from 9 countries participated and shared insights and expertise, including Pasteur Institutes from South Korea, China (Hong Kong), Vietnam, Cambodia, Iran, and France.
In the first session, themed 'Global Research Landscape on AMR,' presentations were given on strategies for improving AMR's prediction and monitoring system and One Health R&D strategies.

In the second session, the topic of ‘AMR Research in Pasteur Network’ was discussed, where the characteristics of AMR in different Asian regions and strategies for enhancing surveillance and developing therapeutics were introduced.
AMR, known as a ‘silent pandemic, is one of the ‘Ten threats to global health’ designated by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Due to AMR, there were 1.27 million deaths in 2019, and it is predicted that by 2050, the annual death toll will reach 10 million. Furthermore, AMR is spreading rapidly, making it increasingly difficult to effectively treat infections with existing antibiotics.
Byungkwon Lim, CEO of IPK, said, “We are making multifaceted efforts to strengthen international collaboration against AMR by participating in a global R&D consortium, conducting international collaborative research on treatment development, and organizing international symposiums. Through the Pasteur Network, we will play a role as a R&D hub for infectious disease in the Asia-Pacific region.”
