Institut Pasteur Korea and the Chemical Data Curation Center Establish Collaboration with EMBL-EBI

(Jul. 10, 2026, Gyeonggi-do, Rep. of Korea) Institut Pasteur Korea (IPK) announced that the Chemical Data Curation Center (CDCC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory's European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) to strengthen global collaboration in compound data management and quality assurance.
The CDCC is a government-supported data quality management center jointly operated by IPK, the Korea Chemical Bank of the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT), and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Medical Innovation Foundation (K-MEDI hub).
The Center focuses on the curation and management of compound-related data submitted to the Korea BioData Station (K-BDS), including bioactivity assay results, chemical structures and spectral information, as well as pharmacological, DMPK (Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics), and toxicity profiling data.
Through this agreement, the partners aim to promote the internationalization of Korea's compound data platform and strengthen collaboration with ChEMBL, EMBL-EBI's flagship database of bioactive molecules. The partnership is expected to accelerate the establishment of global standards for compound data, strengthen quality assessment frameworks, and enhance international capabilities and infrastructure in data curation—key components for advancing AI-driven drug discovery.
Prior to signing the agreement, the CDCC held a working-level meeting with the Chemical Biology Resources Team at EMBL-EBI.
The meeting was attended by Nam Chul Cho, Director of the Korea Chemical Bank (KCB) and Head of the CDCC at KRICT; Inhee Choi, Head of the AI Drug Discovery Laboratory at IPK; Sun Ju Lee, Team Leader of the Drug Development Support Center at K-MEDI hub; and Noel O'Boyle, Head of the Chemical Biology Resources Team at EMBL-EBI, together with representatives from the ChEMBL team. Participants introduced their respective databases and discussed practical strategies for global collaboration.
During the discussions, researchers exchanged views on quality assessment criteria for compound data, the application of artificial intelligence technologies to data curation, and the development of researcher-friendly data submission and registration systems.
"This collaboration establishes an important foundation for ensuring that valuable compound data generated by Korean researchers can be accumulated and managed within a globally recognized standard framework," said Sung Key Jang, CEO of IPK. "We will continue working with our international partners to ensure that high-quality compound data are broadly utilized in global drug discovery and the wider biohealth research community."
