Institut Pasteur in Bangui study shows high prevalence of Central African Children asymptomatic carriers of antibiotic resistant bacteria

2016-08-17

A study published by Institut Pasteur in Bangui, shows nearly 59% of Central African children under the age of 5 are asymptomatic carriers of antibiotic resistant extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E). This latest data describing extreme prevalence of antibiotic resistance reinforces the need for more global awareness on proper prescription & use of antibiotics as well as the need for novel antibiotics.

To address this issue, the Antibacterial Resistance Research Laboratory at Institut Pasteur Korea (IPK) works to extend knowledge of bacterial physiology including metabolism & the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, & applies the knowledge to discover new antibacterial molecules.
