     TALK TITLE
Exploitation of chemical diversity from microbial diversity for
     the
 discovery of useful biomaterials

ABSTRACT
Microbial genetic resources are very important and useful for screening of bioactivities. Only less than 1% of living bacterial species and 5% of fungal species have been cultured, so a lot of them are untapped yet. Adopting selective isolation and de-replication techniques for exploiting new, neglected, rare species will also extend the microbial library as efficient screening sources. Microorganisms produce various kinds of metabolites from a chemical diversity point of view. Screening of new types of biomaterials of microbial origin is a meaningful solution for discovery program. Therefore, Mining microbial metabolites of small molecules for screening strategy is still very promising!
We have tried to get good quality microbial library including some new species and extremophiles for many decades. Tthe total microbial number of strains which we have comes up to over twenty thousands - about 60% of those are actinomycetes. We have kept and provide these isolated strains and culture broth or solvent extracts as screening resources. A value evaluation project (http://www.mrscc.net) is under way on this microbial resources which we have secured for twenty years. This is covering the cultural characteristics and the information on identification and some bioactivities, not just the strains we have. Among them, many strains or culture extracts were provided to related industry, institute and academia for their effective screening research with a lot of information database. Introduction to our microbial resources and some achievement of biomaterial discovery will be introduced and discussed.
