Institut Pasteur Korea and the National Institute of Health sought ways to expand cooperation to strengthen national infectious disease preparedness and response

The Institut Pasteur Korea (IPK) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) broadly explored the opportunities to create synergy through research cooperation and to strengthen Korea's ability to prepare for and respond to infectious diseases. For this, three key people, including Dr. Jun-wook Kwon, Director of the NIH, and Dr. Jang Hee-Chang Jang, Director of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), visited the IPK on June 23.

They met with Dr. Youngmee Jee, IPK CEO, and the heads of major research teams in IPK to learn about the ongoing research and exchanged ideas for further cooperation. They also looked around IPK's core technology and facilities, such as the image-based drug screening platform and the automated compound libraries control system.

In 2013, the two organizations signed a memorandum of understanding to join forces in the health and medical field, and since then, they have shared expertise in the discovery of new drug candidates for tuberculosis and through holding joint symposia.

In particular, IPK is participating in the 'Consortium of Infectious Disease Research Institute' established in 2021 by the NIID, NIH, Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with the purpose of contributing to strengthening the nation's response to major infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Additionally, IPK is operating the NIID-supported flagship laboratory for antiviral drug evaluation, taking the lead in accelerating the development of new drugs to tackle (re)emerging viral diseases.

Leveraging the discussion shared in the meeting, the two organizations will strengthen collaborations focusing on infectious disease drug discovery.
